What is web hosting?

Beginner's guide to web hosting

You've just bought your domain and now you're ready to set up a website - you need a host for your domain.

Basically, while owning yourdomain.com gives you exclusive rights to use that domain name, it does not give you the actually physical space to store the website. Your website will be a series of files that have to be stored somewhere to be accessed when a visitor comes to your site. You buy that space from a web hosting company.

Right now when anyone types yourdomain.com, they will go to a default page your domain registrar has set up. Once you have a web host who will store your web site, you change the setting with your registrar to point to your new host. Instead of being directed to that default page, anyone typing yourdomain.com into their address bar will end up at your new host, where your actual web site files are stored.

Read on to learn more of the basics of web hosting, or jump right in and take a look at these web hosts whose sites will open in a new window.
